A Word Or Phrase To Guide You
Years ago, I started creating a theme for my year. The idea behind the theme was to have a way to filter the opportunities and decisions that came my way. I originally got the idea from a client in Abilene, TX. The CEO of a hospital I was working with chose a new “focused mission” for each calendar year. In working with him, I asked him why he didn’t just have a consistent mission like most organizations did. His response was that the purpose to serve patients and solve their healthcare challenges would always be there. The focused mission was about what would drive them in chasing that purpose for the year.
It made me start thinking about what would guide me in my purpose. Over the years, I have had a variety of words and phrases that helped. Things like… learn, grow, publish, trust, accept the good, sell, serve, and most recently, Do The Work, have all been filter words/phrases in my business. A few years ago, I started creating a home screen background for my word or phrase so I would see it every time I was on my computer. This has really helped in times where I could get distracted with the wrong things. I have typically started thinking about what my focused mission should be in the next year a few months before the current year is finished. I look for signs, patterns, and feelings that will help me move my life and my business up a level. What has helped the most is to know what life I want to experience in the coming year, then correlate those signs, patterns, and feelings back to the outcome desired. I think most of us need a way to filter life more effectively. It is far too easy to fall victim to the tyranny of the urgent instead of chasing the potential of true purpose.
Think about the life you want to experience in the coming year. What do you want to do, have, and feel? When you know these things, you are better prepared to find the right filter that makes achieving them both possible and likely. Don’t go through the year waiting on circumstances to provide you with the experience you want to have. Instead, take the lead role in creating a mission focus for your life. Narrow down the path toward your purpose and eliminate the things that don’t align with your objectives.
John F. Kennedy once said, “Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.” Give direction to the purpose you were put on this earth to accomplish. Create a filter word or phrase to guide you, to help you eliminate the things that don’t matter, and to stay tuned into the frequency that gives your life the direction needed to accomplish greatness.
